Atabey Spiritus

Selected Tobacco is not a well known name in the cigar industry, but they have quickly gained a reputation for creating outstanding super premium cigars. The company currently offers 3 unique lines including Atabey, Byron, and Bandolero (with more on the way) all envisioned and blended by Nelson Alfonso. If you’re not familiar with his name, Alfonso was the visionary behind the Cohiba Behike and many other special edition Havanas. In 2010, he decided it was time to move on and relocated to Costa Rica. He established his own factory and launched his first blends in 2012. It took a lot of work to convince people this was not another brand with amazing packaging and mediocre cigars. Instead he has quietly and steadily built a worthy following for his brands.

Atabey is the name for the goddess of Taino Indians who lived in Cuba. The Tainos would smoke a primitive form of a cigar while praying to their goddess. That spiritual ceremony was known as the Cohiba and the tribe’s communication to Atabey was done through their spiritual guide, the Behike. All Atabey cigars are produced in limited quantities and every cigar is laid to rest for a minimum of 5 years after rolling to ensure proper combustion and exquisite character. The blend is mostly shrouded in secrecy, but we know there are Peruvian tobaccos in the filler and an Ecuadorian Shade wrapper is employed. Tasting notes include flavors of cedar, leather, and caramel with hints of plum, pepper, and salted nuts. Atabey is a masterclass in balance and quality. It’s no wonder this brand has developed such a devoted following so quickly.

LA FLOR DOMINICANA 25TH ANNIVERSARY

Picture if you will, the year was 1994 and the premium cigar boom of the 90s was starting to gain momentum. Lito Gomez and his wife Ines had a very successful jewelry business that catered to high-end clientele. To the shock of their families, they announced they were leaving the jewelry industry to pursue their passion of producing premium cigars in the Dominican Republic. It took them 2 full years to find their footing and launch the La Flor Dominicana brand, but an instant star was born. The couple has been on a roll and they haven’t looked back at the jewelry business since. What made and continues to make the La Flor brand special is that they are known for growing exceptional tobaccos in the Dominican Republic, and producing high quality cigars with outstanding flavor.

The La Flor Dominicana 25th Anniversary is a big, beautiful cigar worthy to celebrate any anniversary or special occasion. Even though the traditional gift for a 25th anniversary is silver, the cigar bears a simple, elegant gold colored band. The La Flor Dominicana 25th Anniversary features a special blend utilizing all tobaccos grown on Gomnez’s farms in the Dominican Republic for the filler and binder. Topping things off is a spectacular Ecuadorian Corojo wrapper (similar to what they use in their highly acclaimed Andalusian Bull, but in this case a higher priming). Expect rich and balanced flavors of earth, cedar, and espresso with prominent notes of pepper, citrus, and honey. If there was ever a cigar that captured the essence of what La Flor Dominicana was capable of, the 25th Anniversary is it.

LA GLORIA CUBANA 8th STREET TORO

La Gloria Cubana is a storied brand with a rich history, and it is recognized the world over as one of the finest premium cigar brands. The brand was reincarnated for American consumers by Ernesto Perez-Carrillo. In the mid 1990s, the brand developed a cult following and set them on a trajectory for success. The brand grew so quickly, in fact, that Perez-Carrillo opened a new factory in the Dominican Republic. With his meteoric growth during the cigar boom, he sold his brand and factory to General Cigar in 1999, but he continued to oversee the factory and blending for another decade before handing over the reins to his team and retiring (at least for some time). La Gloria Cubana continues to be a leader in the industry that produces distinct, Cuban-inspired blends that continue to captivate the hearts and minds of cigar smokers everywhere.

This is without a doubt the most exciting La Gloria Cubana release in recent history. The La Gloria Cuabana 8th Street is the first LGC to be made in Little Havana, Miami, FL in almost 15 years! The brand has deep roots to Calle Ocho (8th Street) that go back to the 1970s, but they came to an end in 2010 when all production was shifted to their El Credito factory in the Dominican Republiclan. These new cigars are made at the prolific boutique (and last remaining on Calle Ocho) factory, El Titan de Bronze. The blend uses Dominican and Nicaraguan filler tobaccos, a Nicaraguan binder, and a simply beautiful Ecuadorian Habano wrapper leaf. This full flavored blend features well balanced tasting notes of earth, cedar, pepper, and espresso along with hints of cream, browned butter, and dried fruits. If this is the future of boutique LGC releases, count us in.

ESPINOSA KNUCKLE SANDWICH MADURO TORO H

You could write volumes of prose on the long journey of what is now known as Espinosa Premium Cigars. None of it would be possible without the Alpha Dawg himself, Erik Espinosa. What a long, strange trip it’s been to get where he is today. To keep it short, he got his start in the industry as a cigar broker in southern Florida and quickly developed a desire to become a brand owner. He first launched EO cigars with his close friend Eddie Ortega and had cigars made by Pepin Garcia in Nicaragua. When Garcia could no longer commit to producing their blends, the duo split. Erik formed Espinosa Premium Cigars and opened his own factory called La Zona in Nicaragua where many of his cigars are made today. There’s so much more to this story, but Erik is one of our favorite people in the industry- honest and trustworthy as the day is long. It’s one of the reasons his brand has developed a cult-like following. He says what he means and does what he promises.

Espinosa Knuckle Sandwich is a project 18 months in the making. Celebrity Chef Guy Fieri has an outsized and outgoing personality and he could’t have found a better partner to help create his own cigar line than fellow outsized personality, Erik Espinosa. But this isn’t some lame attempt to create another celebrity branded cigar. Fieri wanted to learn as much as he possibly could, and took the time to learn from Espinosa about what it takes to create a world class premium cigar. He was hands-on in all aspects of the process from selecting tobacco to blending to rolling. The blend features Nicaraguan filler and binder tobaccos along with an Ecuadorian Sumatra seed maduro wrapper. Tasting notes include flavors of earth, cedar, natural tobacco, and dark chocolate along with hints of leather, pepper, baking spices, and a raisin sweetness. Knuckle Sandwich is the train that will take you straight to flavor town!

AJ FERNANDEZ NEW WORLD DORADO FIGURADO

AJ FERNANDEZ NEW WORLD DORADO FIGURADO

AJ Fernandez is undoubtedly one of the most prolific cigar makers of the modern era. Raised in Cuba, he now operates 10 tobacco farms and 2 cigar factories in Nicaragua. Between these facilities, over 100,000 cigars a day are produced under his watchful eye. His true passion, and why he is able to produce such a wide variety of superior quality premium cigars, is the tobacco that he grows. Without quality materials, your product will never be exceptional. It is this philosophy that drives him to spend equal time between farms and factories. Each tobacco leaf must meet his high standards and each cigar must be expertly constructed. He takes great pride in his creations and would never attach his name to the end product if it didn’t.

The AJ Fernandez New World is a brand that was created to commemorate the discovery and introduction of tobacco grown in the New World (the Americas) to the old. Since 1492, these tobaccos have been the benchmark the world over. The New World Dorado is the latest release in the and arguably the best to date. Dorado means gold in Spanish and it’s a reference to the golden hue of the soil where most of the tobaccos from this blend are grown in Estelí, Nicaragua. The blend uses AJ-grown Nicaraguan filler tobaccos, along with a Nicaraguan Criollo binder, and a Nicaraguan Habano Sun Grown wrapper. These box-pressed cigars feature tasting notes of earth, cedar, caramel, and coffee along with hints of pepper, cream, leather, and vanilla. It’s truly one of the most exciting releases from AJ Fernandez in recent years!
