There’s something exciting about watching a young cigar company hustle. They’ve got the vision and the drive, they usually have some angle to work, and hopefully they have the tobaccos and cigars to back it all up. Luckily for Reinier Lorenzo he did. In 2011 he founded HVC as a way of paying homage to Havana City where he lived for most of his life. He was inspired by his upbringing to keep the Cuban tradition of hand-made cigars alive and well. His focus is mainly on outstanding, small-crop Nicaraguan tobaccos that remind him of home. Each cigar in the HVC portfolio is a unique experience that in some way or another pays homage to his hometown. We jumped on the HVC band wagon early on, and it has been a pleasure to watch this outstanding upstart company gain traction and attention.
The HVC Hot Cake was released as a follow up to the company’s Pan Caliente line. Pan Caliente (also meaning Hot Cakes) was designed to be a well-balanced, medium strength cigar. Lorenzo fielded many calls to produce something was a bit edgier, but still had balance. His answer is the HVC Hot Cake, and boy, did he turn it up! Hot Cake starts with a core of 3 distinct varieties of Corojo 2006 Maduro tobaccos, Aganorsa-grown Jalapa Corojo 99, and Aganorsa-grown Esteli Corojo 98 for the binder and filler. Topping this heavy hitting blend is a deep, dark San Andreas Maduro wrapper leaf. This cigar is bold but balanced. You’ll taste notes of leather, pepper, and earthy woods with hints of dark berries, cocoa, anise and a slight raisin sweetness. These excellent, full flavored cigars will keep you coming back for more.
