One of our favorite aspects of the cigar industry is the cast of characters that lead some of today’s cigar companies. Some are reclusive and would rather focus on their craft while others are outspoken and ostentatious. However, they all share a passion for outstanding tobacco. Dion Giolito, Illusione’s founder, is what you might call a “super tobacco nerd.” He has a passion for seeking knowledge about different types of tobacco and how they work together when creating a blend. And he’s quite good at it too. It’s why Illusione has garnered a well-deserved reputation and accolades for creating cigars that are known for their balance and intricacy.
It’s hard to imagine that the Illusione Epernay series turned 10 years old in 2019. It was a blend that was designed to showcase how elegant, subtle, and refined a blend one could create without relying on heavy-hitting Ligero tobaccos. Giolito hit it out of the park with the launch of Epernay and began to cement his legacy as a great cigar blender. 10 years in, the Epernay line is still made at the Raices Cubanas factory in Honduras. The blend for the Epernay 10th Anniversary D’Aosta is similar to other Epernay blends, using all Nicaraguan tobaccos, but he selected a different binder leaf that he felt would better showcase the flavors of the filler tobaccos. Subtlety is what Epernay is about, but this small change made a big impact without altering the character the cigar is known for. Tasting notes include caramel, cream, pepper, and coffee along with hints of citrus and nuts. The D’Aosta is a symphony of flavor and one of the best Illusione Epernay we’ve had the opportunity to enjoy.
