In 2009, shortly after family patriarch Fernando Leon passed away, his son Guillermo Leon began producing limited quantities of his father’s personal blend and named it the Fernando Leon series. Guillermo first allowed visitors to the La Aurora cigar factory to sample these cigars and later provided limited distribution to La Aurora’s best retail partners. There are a few different types of Fernando Leon around, but this new Fernando Leon Legacy series is the best yet. The blend features fillers from the Dominican Republic and Brazil, a Dominican binder, and a Corojo-seed Dominican grown wrapper. The result is a medium-full strength cigar that is smooth and flavorful. Tasting notes include flavors of cedar, earth, and cocoa with hints of pepper, baking spices, and crackers. This new Fernando Leon release is the best yet! Only 2500 boxes of 10 will be made.
Of all of Dion Giolito’s Illusione creations, none has seen a more topsy-turvy, on-again off-again history than his Cruzado line. While not the first blends he released, it was certainly one of the first few blends he released to the masses. Due to the quick changing nature of the industry, the Cruzado line has been released and discontinued a few times. However, its last reintroduction in 2016 is the one that stuck. The Illusione Cruzado line is now made in Nicaragua at Aganorsa’s TABSA factory, and features a Nicaraguan buro blend of Aganorsa tobaccos. The wrapper leaf is an exclusive Nicaraguan Corojo Rosado. Tasting notes include flavors of natural tobacco, cedar, and leather with hints of earth, pepper, dark berries. It’s another excellent and complex blend from the creative palate of Giolito.
