This is one of those under-the-radar brands that deserves its time in the sun. They are produced by JRE Tobacco at their Las Lomas factory in Honduras. If you’re not familiar with JRE, it’s Julio Eiroa’s premium cigar company. That name should be familiar as Julio is Christian Eiroa’s (of CLE Cigar and formerly of Camacho Cigar fame) father and business partner. He’s one hell of a cigar maker that has been in the shadows for far too long. For over 50 years, he has been growing tobacco and making great cigars. JRE was created to showcase both Julio’s talents and some of the great tobaccos he grows and stores. His Aladino line has drawn a lot of attention lately, but Tatascan was his first premium line and it’s really good.
It’s kind of a funny name, but Tatascan refers to the head boss or the man who wears the big hat. Hence the image on the band. It’s a nod to Julio and the respect that he garners from his family, friends, and employees. Tatascan was designed to be a value priced line, but it punches way above its price point. The blend features Honduran filler tobacco and Julio’s proprietary Honduran Corojo tobacco used for the binder. This version of Tatascan features an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper lead. It’s a very pleasant smoke with flavors of caramel, cream, and cedar with hints of pepper and baking spices.
